Fen Studio Architects is a sustainable, design-led architecture studio specialising in contemporary homes, extensions and retrofit projects across the East of England. Our work focuses on creating low-energy buildings that balance strong architectural design with careful attention to context, materiality and long-term performance.
We believe sustainability and good design should work together naturally. By carefully considering light, form, materials and building performance from the outset, we create homes and spaces that not only reduce environmental impact, but also improve the everyday experience of living within them and strengthens the connection to their surroundings.

We commonly work on projects in sensitive locations such as outside of settlement boundaries and within Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We have a high success rate in securing planning consents on these types of tricky sites by adopting a narrative-led approach that frames each proposal within its wider landscape, community and policy context. Rather than treating planning as a checklist of technical requirements, we begin by understanding the story of the site: its history, visual and ecological character and local settlement patterns. This narrative becomes the organising principle for design decisions, guiding siting, massing, materials and landscape responses so the proposal becomes a considered continuation of place rather than an imposition upon it.
We place significant importance on how buildings relate to the natural landscape, considering not only the architecture itself, but also how a proposal responds to biodiversity, ecology and the wider character of its setting. This includes careful consideration of landscape integration, habitat protection and opportunities to enhance biodiversity.
By developing clear, context-driven proposals supported by thoughtful visual material and concise planning narratives, we help demonstrate how each scheme can sit naturally within its surroundings while contributing positively to the wider landscape and local context. This considered approach has helped secure planning permission on a wide range of constrained and challenging sites.
